Bridge like a park / 2015

A proposal submitted to the Minamisanriku Town Reconstruction Bridge Design Competition. The site is in the Shizugawa district of Minamisanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture, facing Shizugawa Bay. The district, with its rias coastline typical of the Sanriku coastline, was devastated by the tsunami that followed the March 11, 2011 earthquake in the Tohoku region. The two banks of the Yawata River, which runs through the center of the district, are connected by bridges to form a town, one on the left bank for tourism, commerce, and fisheries, and the other on the right bank for greenery such as the Reconstruction Memorial Park and Nature Center. Of the bridges connecting these two banks, the humanitarian bridge near the mouth of the river was the subject of the competition. The competition called for a proposal for a reconstruction bridge that would take into account the surrounding landscape and create a circulation throughout the city. We proposed a “park-like bridge” that does not appear to be a bridge at first glance, because we thought that a bridge that is not a temporary bridge that is used only for the passage of people and things, but a bridge that welcomes a wide range of people, where people can stay and relax, would be appropriate as a “bridge for reconstruction.
